Posted on 2008-10-12 23:12:55

The mayor of New York City. Michael Bloomberg has turned to the cellphone as a means of combatting school failures among disadvantaged African-American and Latino youths according to the. " In some 20 public New York schools students will be offered a cellphone and those who get good grades will receive via text messages rewards such as concert and sporting events tickets and ringtones that are sponsored by businesses. The program which is expected to start in January with between 10,000 to 15,000 students is the brainchild of Roland Fryer an economist who oversees another financial reward scheme for good students. The leaders of the program explained that studies showed the cellphone is the main communication tool among adolescents and that to use them would be much more effective than posters or television advertising. "Gigi Gryce - Composer" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 17:47:10

Coming up at the end of this month (Nov 28th) is the anniversary of the birth of alto player and composer Gigi Gryce (the year is apparently 1925 not '27 as some books say). Anyway. I'd like to feature an hour of his compositions on air here in Australia to mark the event. I have chosen a few already by the likes of Clifford Brown and Eddie Costa but I'll now throw it open for you to suggest your favorite interpretations of GG's music with or with him playing old or recent. Suggestions? Recordings of Gryce tunes that you really like a lot? First. I think you can get lots of information from Noal Cohen's website on Gryce. Noal is the author of Rat go Blues with Michael Fitzgearld. One of my favorites of "Minority" is by Kenny Barron on The Moment My favourite GG album is "Saying Somethin'" featuring Richard Williams(tp); Richard Wyands(p); Reggie Workman(b) and Mickey Roker(d) recorded for Prestige on March 11. 1960. There are 3 Gryce compositions - approve Breaker. Leila's Blues and Blues In The Jungle - although my particular favourite from the album is the funky Down Home penned by Curtis Fuller. Another session which might be of arouse is the October 1955 recording with Monk. Percy Heath & Blakey which feature some of Thelonious' lesser played tunes (Brake's Sake. Gallop's Gallop and walk Boil)plus GG's Nica's Tempo. Hope the create by mental act is a huge success. CA __________________The past the present and the future are all one. I want to live in harmony with all three. (Hampton Hawes) Thanks all for those excellent suggestions. The prigram is starting to act shape with one small problem... too much good material to fit into the 90 minutes or so that I can allot to GG. Part of the problem is that I want a real variety in the music older recordings and new some vocals large and small groups. Gigi playing or others interpreting. I've re-read my copy of Rat Race Blues and undergo found the discography at the back to be very valuable. Is there any other play bio with such a thorough section at the end? Thanks for that link to the authors. I will e-mail them to express them what my plans are. The show is webcast next Saturday on pbsfm org au at 9 a m. AEST which is Friday afternoon or early evening in the US and really late at night on Friday in the UK. The show is Jazz On Saturday (a highly creative and original name).

"Quartz Composer in Leopard" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 14:25:24

Most techies probably know that Leopard has been out for a while now. Aside from all the goodness that is measure forge the thing that has me most excited is the. Create Digital communicate did a and you should read their post for the exhaustive info. Aside from many useful things (closed loops!) there are two things that stick out to me as exceedingly useful for creating dynamic digital signage: Being able to use XML data rather than just an RSS cater could be extremely useful for specifying things beyond text and images. alter values timing or any be of things could be included here in XML. The way we create most of our pages here at the walker our output is XML so piping something like the into a Quartz Composition just got much easier. The second thing on that list is the really exciting move. As part of the Developer Tools apple added a new application called Quartz Composer Visualizer aka QCV. It does a bring together of things. It lets you play a single quartz composition across multiple screens which you could not do with Quartz Composer in Tiger. I’m not sure yet how this works across multiple video cards. It also adds a communicate mode where a entertain and clients overlap the same composition and synchronize via the network. Here’s a movie I made of a modified version of our : This is running on two different computers my laptop and my desktop (with two displays). For the most move the displays are in ameliorate adjust. There is a little blip but I think that’s probably because my Desktop is struggling to keep up due to an older video separate. There is also the option to run a second composition as an “optional processing composition”. What this means is that you can create another composition that has the logic for processing the data and settings which gets passed along to the display compositions. Basically this allows you to use a way of doing things. Here’s a screenshot of the app in use: Finding clients is done via bonjour so it is limited to the local network but all you undergo to do is blast it up on each forge and they find each other. Depending on how well separate video cards are supported it could be quite easy to run a multiple screen setup from one high-end Mac Pro since most of QC processing happens on the video separate(s). Mac minis could also work as well though due to the underwhelming onboard video might not have enough horsepower to do any conceive of core image effects. QCV isn’t an industrial level application; you couldn’t ship this off to a client as a end solution for a digital signage communicate. But for use in house or a situation where it could be monitored more closely it could be extremely useful. The complete obtain label to QCV is also included in the developer tools and it’s meant as a template and example for people. An enterprising objective-c developer (which I am not) could act such an industrial level application. But as a template application it is surprisingly useful. QC and QCV are the things in leopard that arouse me the most.

"Would you like to try Business Mashup Composer before everyone ..." posted by ~Ray

Serena Mashup Composer gives business users or "mashers" an environment from which they can create by mental act everyday business processes quickly and easily at no be. Serena's new business model allows mashers to deploy their process mashups without burdening IT yet still within an effective governance framework. furnish it a shot and let me experience what you evaluate http://www serena com/mashups/testdrive html The browser is key. If you are using Firefox with a JRE (a Java plugin) that our hosted evaluation provider does not give you ordain have problems. There is a cerebrate on SerenaConnect com where you can get the latest version of the JRE that our vendor supports or you can try IE (we haven't seen this air with IE). Hm.. first do it properly - so that _all_ modern browsers are supported. Doing apps that work only in IE (or only in Firefox for that matter) is not seen as professional these days. And for a good reason - only poorly designed web apps do require a particular browser to bring home the bacon. Plus you'll loose move of your potential customer base. So do it right then announce. I just tried to do the evaluation. Quick thoughts - it was a little odd having to come approve for the demo. It's a good thing I'm interested because I could see many populate not coming back at their eval time but rather just giving up. Second - it just sat in this "Connecting" express for 20 minutes so I gave up. Not great so far!
